Which Utah jobs count as correctional officers here, and which don't?

Transparent Utah lists every public employee by title. We decided each custody title by hand.

Counted as correctional officers

  • The State of Utah's correctional officers. Correctional Officer (also written "Corrl Officer, POST"), counted as one employer for the whole state.
  • County jail officers. Corrections Officer and Corrections Deputy, at every level, as each county names the job, and jail deputies: deputy sheriffs whose title names the jail assignment (Deputy Sheriff - Corrections in Utah, Weber and Cache counties). Utah law's definition of a correctional officer covers sworn and certified officers employed by a county, not only the state's Department of Corrections.3

Shown separately or left out

  • Sergeants, lieutenants and captains. In the pay by rank table above, not in the officer figures.
  • Deputy sheriffs whose title doesn't name the jail. Salt Lake County's jail staff, for example, aren't in titles that say corrections, so Salt Lake County has no page here.
  • Titles that combine patrol and jail work. Duchesne County's Deputy Sheriff/Corrections Officer.
  • Davis County. Most of its wages in the file are zero, so its officers aren't counted.
  • Adult probation and parole agents, case managers, control point operators, jail nurses and clerks.
  • Trainees, part-time and reserve officers.

Sources for the Utah correctional officer figures

Every person who held a correctional officer position at any point in fiscal year 2025 counts toward the headcount. Pay figures use only people who worked for the same employer the year before, were paid at least 90% as much as in that year, earned at least 90% of that pay in the job's titles, and were paid at least $15,080, a full year at Utah's minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.2 Utah's file has no hours or start dates, so this is the closest sign of a full year. Total pay is the wages each employer reported, before tax. Utah's file has one wage figure per person with overtime inside it, so pay here is total pay and overtime can't be shown on its own. Every figure covers at least 5 people.
